Nissan GT-R R35: Track Cooling, Brakes, and Chassis Setup by ATOMIC-SHOP

The Nissan GT-R R35 is a devastating force of acceleration, but managing a 1,700 kg chassis under continuous circuit abuse quickly transforms kinetic energy into extreme thermal saturation. At ATOMIC-SHOP, we bypassed cosmetic trends and single-lap vanity numbers to transform this white R35 into a thermally resilient, unyielding circuit weapon.

By overhauling the GR6 transaxle cooling with HKS and Dodson hardware, stabilizing VR38DETT fueling via ID1000cc injectors, shedding unsprung inertia with forged ADVAN GT wheels, and anchoring deceleration with two-piece PFC V3 floating rotors, we systematically eliminated the factory bottlenecks that plague high-load GT-Rs. The result is a relentless track package engineered for repeatable, fade-free lap consistency.

The Nissan GT-R R35 has never been a fragile car. It’s a heavy, powerful, all-wheel-drive twin-turbo platform built for one clear purpose: to deliver impressive dynamics on the road with maximum efficiency. However, when this car hits the track for a series of hard laps, priorities change. Straight-line speed alone is no longer enough. The real challenges become temperature control, brake stability, fluid performance, and lap-after-lap consistency.

This white Nissan GT-R R35 arrived at ATOMIC-SHOP with a clear mission: to ensure flawless stability during intensive track days. The project's goal wasn't exterior styling or chasing impressive dyno numbers. The main focus was on the systems that endure the highest loads during prolonged driving: the GR6 dual-clutch robotic transmission, the fuel and intake/exhaust systems of the VR38DETT engine, brakes, tires, suspension, and driver safety.

The result is a maximally dialed-in, track-ready R35 built on proven components from HKS, DODSON, PFC, APR, ADVAN, MICHELIN, SWIFT, RED LINE OIL, and other leading brands.

Why the Nissan GT-R R35 Needs Efficient Thermal Management on the Track

The Nissan GT-R R35 is astonishingly fast right out of the factory, but it is a complex and heavy machine. A curb weight of around 1,700 kg, two turbochargers, all-wheel drive, and a rear-mounted GR6 transmission (transaxle layout) generate a massive thermal load on the drivetrain during track sessions.

In city conditions, these components operate in a relatively mild regime. On the track, everything is different: long wide-open throttle sections, constant hard braking, high lateral G-forces, and short cooling intervals exhaust the car. Transmission oil temperature rises rapidly, engine heat extraction becomes critical, the brakes absorb a gigantic amount of energy, and the tires are forced to grip a heavy, powerful chassis.

That is exactly why the foundation of this project was not just raw power, but absolute thermal stability and reliability.

GR6 Transmission Cooling: Upgrades from HKS, ARD, and DODSON

One of the most vulnerable areas of the GT-R R35 during track driving is the GR6 dual-clutch robotic transmission. Under extreme loads, the transmission oil temperature quickly reaches critical marks, especially during long sessions or in hot weather. Excessive overheating forces the car's electronic systems to engage a limp mode, limiting power and transmission load.

To minimize this risk, an HKS transmission oil cooler (DCT Cooler) was installed on the GT-R. Its task is simple and effective: significantly increase the cooling capacity for the transmission fluid and keep the GR6 within its operating temperature range throughout the entire session.

The transmission structure was reinforced with an enlarged ARD oil pan, along with DODSON components: an anti-surge plate, transmission pan filter, differential cooling scoop, and input shaft seals. This guarantees stable fluid circulation, high reliability during maintenance, and an extended lifespan for the entire transmission under peak loads.

An important nuance: the goal is not to claim that the transmission will never overheat under any circumstances, but to give the GR6 the necessary margin of thermal resistance and mechanical strength for stable track performance.

VR38DETT Fuel Delivery and Exhaust System Optimization

The VR38DETT engine is the heart of the Nissan GT-R R35. It boasts colossal torque, responds exceptionally well to tuning, and has proven its reliability in the most powerful builds. However, on the track, uninterrupted fuel delivery and efficient exhaust gas scavenging are of key importance.

For reliable VR38DETT operation under sustained loads, the fuel system was upgraded with high-performance Walbro pumps and ID1000cc (Injector Dynamics) injectors. This ensures precise and uninterrupted fuel supply at high boost pressure levels, eliminating the risk of fuel starvation.

Exhaust efficiency and backpressure were significantly improved by replacing the restrictive factory parts with ARD downpipes and a full HKS Legamax exhaust system. This minimizes exhaust backpressure, reduces thermal load on the turbos, and gives the GT-R a distinct sporty sound without sacrificing comfort and reliability.

The engine work was complemented by HKS spark plugs for stable mixture ignition. Additional thermal protection is provided by THERMO-TEC heat sleeves and DEI Quick Fix Tape, isolating critical lines from the high temperatures in the engine bay and underbody.

Braking System: Component Base from PFC, DODSON, and PAGID RACING

A track-focused GT-R requires a braking system capable of withstanding constant decelerations from high speeds. The heavy and powerful R35 has to dissipate a massive amount of kinetic energy on every lap. During a long session, the main problem isn't so much peak braking force, but pedal consistency, thermal capacity, and resistance to overheating (brake fade).

On the front axle, two-piece PFC brake rotors and racing pads with the PFC 08 friction compound were installed. The PFC 08 compound is a proven solution for endurance racing, providing a stable friction coefficient and predictable performance under repetitive braking, where predictability is far more important than a lack of dust or acoustic comfort.

The rear axle was equipped with PFC rotors paired with track-oriented PFC 08 pads. This created a perfectly balanced setup designed for extreme loads and ease of maintenance.

The brake cooling issue was resolved using the DODSON R35 Brake Cooling Kit, which directs oncoming airflow straight to the rotors, pads, and hubs. The standard fluid was replaced with high-temperature PAGID RACING sports brake fluid with a high boiling point, preventing pedal "sponginess" under overheating.

ADVAN GT Wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Tires, and Swift Springs

The Nissan GT-R R35 places incredibly high demands on wheels and tires. Any increase in wheel strength, contact patch optimization, or suspension response improvement instantly translates to better vehicle behavior under braking, in corners, and during acceleration.

For this project, the factory wheels were replaced with ADVAN GT Premium forged wheels in the signature Racing Titanium Blue color. Specs: 20x10 ET35 in the front and 20x12 ET20 in the rear. This allowed for a wider track and increased contact patch, while simultaneously reducing unsprung mass compared to many factory options.

The wheels were wrapped in MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 track-focused semi-slicks in a staggered setup: 285/35 R20 up front and 325/30 R20 in the rear. This combination provides immense mechanical grip and maximum stability in high-speed corners, while remaining suitable for confident driving on public roads.

The wheel setup is completed by durable MUTEKI SR45R lug nuts.

To improve chassis handling, SWIFT Springs Sport Spec R sport springs were installed. They lower the center of gravity, reduce body roll, and make the car's steering response more precise and instantaneous. For the heavy AWD R35 platform, this solution allows the driver to feel the grip limit much better without a radical replacement of the entire suspension.

Aerodynamics: Elements from APR and Stillen

At high speeds, proper aerodynamic balance plays a crucial role. The factory GT-R aerodynamics are very good, but for serious track driving, additional downforce gives the driver much more confidence in high-speed sweepers.

An APR Performance rear wing was mounted on the trunk lid, providing noticeable downforce on the rear axle. The aero package is complemented by a front splitter and side skirts from STILLEN, which optimize airflow under the chassis and along the sides of the body.

Besides functionality, these elements give the R35 an aggressive look, but their main purpose here is purely practical — vehicle stability at track speeds.

Cockpit and Safety: RECARO, ATOMIC, and OMP

Inside the cabin, the priority shifted from Grand Touring comfort to precise vehicle control. The factory seats were replaced with RECARO Pole Position bucket seats in black velour. On the track, quality lateral driver support is not a luxury, but a necessity, allowing you to focus on piloting rather than bracing yourself against the steering wheel during high G-forces.

The seats are mounted on custom ATOMIC brackets, ensuring a low and correct driving position for a better feel of the car.

A 2 kg OMP aluminum fire extinguisher became a mandatory and practical safety element for track days.
