The BMW M2 G87 is one of the most focused modern M cars: compact, rear-wheel drive, and powered by the S58 twin-turbo inline-six engine, which is also used in the M3 and M4 family. From the factory, it already has all the right ingredients for serious driving — a powerful engine, a rigid chassis, and a playful character that sets it apart from larger sports cars.
But, like many modern performance cars, the standard M2 is designed for a balance between emotions, comfort, environmental regulations, noise limits, and daily practicality. For owners seeking a sharper sound, a lower stance, faster throttle response, and the most focused driving experience possible, there is always room for a carefully selected upgrade package.
This BMW M2 G87 project by ATOMIC-SHOP was not designed as an extreme race car or track weapon. The goal was more precise: to emphasize the car's character without losing what makes the G87 platform so exciting. The modification package combines an AKRAPOVIČ exhaust system, KW height-adjustable springs, EIBACH Pro-Spacers, Stage 1 software calibration, RED LINE engine oil, and a genuine BMW OEM carbon spoiler.
Project Goal: Sharper Character Without Losing the M2 Identity
The M2 G87 feels muscular and direct right from the factory, but its stock setup leaves room for improvement in several key aspects. The exhaust can sound more expressive, the stance can sit more naturally over the wheels, the S58 can respond with greater eagerness, and the cockpit feel can provide a better connection to the car's potential.
For this project, the ATOMIC-SHOP specialists focused on four main areas: sound, stance, software response, and heavy-duty maintenance preparation. Each upgrade was selected to support active fast-road driving and occasional track days, keeping the car balanced and practical.
AKRAPOVIČ Exhaust System: A More Expressive Voice for the S58
The S58 engine is a powerful technical base, but the factory exhaust system and emissions equipment make its sound restrained and civilized. This is logical for daily use, but many M2 owners crave more emotion and the characteristic sound of the inline-six.
To give this G87 M2 a vibrant character, ATOMIC-SHOP installed the AKRAPOVIČ Slip-On Line Titanium system along with the AKRAPOVIČ Evolution Link Pipe Set and the Carbon Hexagonal Tail Pipe Set. This setup refines the car's acoustic characteristics, reduces weight compared to factory components, and gives the rear a complete, motorsport-inspired look.
The titanium construction is one of the key advantages of the AKRAPOVIČ system. It helps reduce weight at the rear and gives the car a sharper, more thoroughbred sound, without turning the project into a banally loud show car. The Carbon Hexagonal tailpipes logically complement the visual concept, integrating perfectly into the factory diffuser.
KW HAS Springs and Eibach Pro-Spacers: Lowering and Proper Fitment
The factory G87 M2 features a distinct widebody, but the standard ride height and wheel fitment can make the car look more conservative than its chassis allows. Instead of completely replacing the suspension, the ATOMIC-SHOP specialists chose the KW Height Adjustable Springs Kit.
The KW HAS kit allows you to adjust the ride height within the tested range while retaining the factory adaptive dampers. This is a practical solution for owners seeking a lower stance, better body roll control, and a harmonious silhouette without upgrading to a full coilover setup.
To complement the lowered ride height, the car received EIBACH Pro-Spacers: 12 mm at the front and 15 mm at the rear. This improves wheel fitment, fills the wheel arches more naturally, and gives the car a wider, more planted look. On the road, the slightly widened track also contributes to more confident stability and a more aggressive visual presence.
Together, the KW HAS kit and EIBACH spacers make the M2 look more settled and purposeful, while keeping the factory wheel and damper architecture intact.
Stage 1 Software Calibration and RED LINE 5W40 Oil
The S58 engine responds beautifully to proper software calibration. For this project, ATOMIC-SHOP used a BOOTMOD3 Stage 1 tune to unlock performance and improve engine response, while maintaining the balance for comfortable daily driving and occasional track days.
Stage 1 calibration is traditionally focused on optimizing boost pressure, torque delivery, and throttle behavior within the limits of the stock hardware and fuel quality. The result is a significantly stronger mid-range pull, more immediate acceleration, and greater driving dynamics from the twin-turbo engine.
Since increased performance brings higher thermal and mechanical loads, proper attention was also given to maintenance. The factory engine oil was replaced with RED LINE Professional Series EURO 5W40 Motor Oil. For a highly tuned turbocharged engine like the S58, exceptional thermal stability and high shear protection are critical, especially during active driving or under extreme track loads.
BMW OEM Carbon Spoiler: Subtle Aerodynamics and Factory-Level Quality
The final exterior touch was a genuine BMW OEM carbon spoiler. It adds a subtle aerodynamic accent to the rear of the car and completes the visual balance created by the AKRAPOVIČ carbon tailpipes.
This is not a massive track wing or a radical aero kit. It is a clean OEM-style element that harmonizes with the design language of the G87 M2, giving the rear end a more cohesive and sporty look.
Verdict: A More Focused BMW M2 G87
This BMW M2 G87 was not turned into an uncompromising track car — and that is exactly the point. The project sharpened the car in the very areas that are most critical for a fast street car and moderate track days: sound, stance, throttle response, visual balance, and technical preparation.
The AKRAPOVIČ exhaust gives the S58 engine a distinctive voice. The KW HAS kit and EIBACH Pro-Spacers improve the stance and fitment. The BOOTMOD3 Stage 1 calibration provides convincing dynamics. The RED LINE 5W40 oil protects the engine under high loads, and the BMW OEM carbon spoiler completes the exterior with a neat factory touch.
