Manley Performance: American Muscle for Your Import Engine
When you decide to double or triple your engine's horsepower, factory components become ticking time bombs. Connecting rods bend, valves melt, springs float, and pistons crack. Manley Performance, founded by Hank Manley over 50 years ago, manufactures internal components designed to survive this abuse. They are a brand synonymous with reliability in NHRA, NASCAR, and World Time Attack racing.
ATOMIC-SHOP is an official dealer of Manley Performance. We offer a full range of engine internals: from budget-friendly H-Beam rods to the legendary Turbo Tuff series for 1500+ HP monsters. Whether you are building a Subaru EJ25, Mitsubishi 4G63, Nissan VR38, or Toyota 2JZ — Manley has the solution.
Connecting Rods: H-Beam vs. Turbo Tuff (I-Beam)
This is the most common question. Which rod should you choose? Manley clearly defines its lineups:
| Series | Profile | Application |
|---|---|---|
| H-Beam / H-Plus | 'H' shaped cross-section. | Street / Sport (up to 600-800 HP). Lightweight, economical, reliable. Perfect balance for most builds. Comes with ARP 2000 bolts. |
| Turbo Tuff® | 'I' shaped cross-section. | Extreme Drag / Pro (1000+ HP). Massive, heavier, but absolutely unbreakable. Designed for insane boost. Often paired with ARP 625+ bolts. |
Valves: Stainless or Inconel?
Factory valves often fail under high heat. Manley offers one-piece forged upgrades:
— Severe Duty (Intake): High-grade Stainless Steel. Excellent for naturally aspirated or moderate boost.
— Extreme Duty (Exhaust): Made from Inconel superalloy. It retains strength at 1000°C. Mandatory for high-boost turbo engines with Anti-Lag.
Platinum Series Pistons
Manley uses 2618 alloy. Unlike brittle factory pistons, 2618 is ductile. Under severe detonation, it deforms rather than shattering, saving your block. Features include offset pins for quiet operation and moly-coated skirts.
Springs & Retainers: Revving High
When revving past 8000 RPM with aggressive cams, stock springs can't keep up (Valve Float).
Manley NexTek valve springs paired with Titanium Retainers solve this. Titanium is 40% lighter than steel, reducing valvetrain mass and allowing precise valve control at extreme RPMs.
ARP Bolts: The Standard of Quality
A rod is only as strong as its bolts. Manley partners with the best: ARP. All Manley rods come pre-equipped with genuine ARP 2000 or ARP Custom Age 625+ fasteners. This ensures you have the strongest connection possible without needing to buy aftermarket bolts separately.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do forged pistons "slap"?
Yes, on a cold engine. 2618 alloy expands more with heat, so they need larger clearances. A light tapping noise when cold is normal and disappears once warmed up.
Do I need Turbo Tuff rods for 500 HP?
No. H-Beams are lighter (better response) and cheaper. Turbo Tuff is overkill for 500 HP and adds unnecessary weight.
What is the "Economical" series?
Also known as Sportmaster. These are forged rods with less finishing machine work. A great budget choice for mild performance rebuilds.
