CP-Carrillo: The Backbone of Your 1000+ HP Engine

In the internal combustion engine, no component endures a more hellish existence than the connecting rod. It must withstand explosive compressive forces from above and immense tensile loads from below, thousands of times per minute. When you are building an 800, 1000, or 2000 horsepower project, the factory rod becomes a ticking time bomb. CP-Carrillo is the tool to defuse that bomb.

The Legacy of Fred Carrillo: Why H-Beam?

Founder Fred Carrillo was a pioneer in bringing the H-Beam profile to motorsport. Unlike factory I-Beam rods, the H-Beam design offers superior stiffness under compressive loads while maintaining low weight. This prevents the rod from bending or buckling during the power stroke when cylinder pressures reach multiple tons.

Today, Carrillo has perfected this design. They use their own proprietary steel alloy (Carrilloloy), which is significantly cleaner and stronger than the standard aircraft-grade 4340 steel used by competitors. Every rod undergoes multi-stage heat treatment and shot peening to relieve surface stress and maximize fatigue life.

The Bolts: The Strongest Link

A connecting rod rarely fails in the middle. It fails where the cap meets the rod body—at the bolts. This happens at high RPM during the exhaust stroke when the piston tries to launch itself through the cylinder head. Carrillo offers two legendary bolt series:

Quality Control: The Magnaflux Standard

Why does a Carrillo set cost more? Because you are paying for peace of mind. Every single rod is individually inspected using the Magnaflux process. The part is magnetized and coated with particles that glow under UV light, revealing even microscopic surface cracks invisible to the naked eye. If a rod has even a molecular imperfection, it is scrapped, not shipped.

CP Pistons: The Perfect Match

While Carrillo is famous for rods, their CP Pistons division manufactures some of the finest forged pistons globally. They are engineered to work in harmony with the rods.

Pro-H vs. Pro-A: Which Beam?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I reuse Carrillo bolts?

Yes, unlike factory TTY bolts, Carrillo fasteners (WMC and CARR) are reusable. However, you must measure the bolt's "Free Length" with a micrometer during every rebuild. If the bolt has permanently stretched beyond the specification (usually 0.0005-0.001"), it must be replaced. Never torque these by feel; follow the stretch method.

Do I need Carrillo rods for 400 HP?

Honestly, for 400 HP on most modern engines (EJ25, 2JZ, B58), cheaper rods (like Manley Sportsman) might suffice. Carrillo is a product for high-budget, high-stakes builds where the cost of failure (a destroyed engine block) far outweighs the cost of the rods. It is the choice for 600, 800, 1000+ HP.

What is the "Bullet Series"?

This is CP-Carrillo's answer to the need for affordable high performance. Bullet Series rods and pistons are made in the same USA factory from the same materials but undergo fewer finishing steps and offer fewer custom options. It is an excellent compromise: Carrillo metallurgy at an off-the-shelf price point.
